Anabaptists & John Calvin Found Shelter at Strasbourg. The Calm Would Not Last

Published on September 17, 2026
The Anabaptist story moves north in this episode, into the Low Countries, what is today the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. But here, the story turns complicated. Not all influential Anabaptist leaders had sound theology; some drifted to extreme positions. Melchior Hoffman represents this complex nature. Dean Taylor, Stephen Russell, and Reagan Schrock dig into his complex legacy, from his legitimate contributions to the Anabaptist movement that helped launch the Dutch Anabaptist church while also staking his credibility on prophecies of Christ's return that never came true. Hoffman returned to Strasbourg, France, and requested the authorities imprison him. Why would anyone do that? Meanwhile, also in Strasbourg, John Calvin was watching the Anabaptists. What did he make of them? What did Calvin actually write about the Schleitheim Confession? And as Calvinism spread, what did it cost the early Anabaptist movement? Anabaptist Origins is a 10-part documentary series produced by Anabaptist Perspectives that tells the story of the first hundred years of the Anabaptist movement.
